The Wheel Rig - Dev Blog #16

Today we wanted to share the Wheel Rig part. In Gamecraft, if you wanted to create steering and suspension you’d need to place each of them separately. The Wheel Rig in Techblox solves this extra level of complexity by including all this functionality into one powerful part.

The particular wheel rig we are going to talk about today is our first version. We want to produce bespoke wheel rigs that account for different vehicles with varying suspensions.

A few dev blogs ago we shared the engine block, and we revealed the engine cog as a special output that would only work with other blocks that had a special engine cog input. The wheel Rig is our first part that has a special cog input. You can check out the widget below:

Here’s a greybox of the wheel rig. We are still working on the art for this part so it is unlikely to look exactly like this in game. It is currently 1 x 1 x 3 in size in case anyone wants more specs!

For those wanting to know about handling, we are looking into making handbrake turns possible, but you’d need to rig up your own ‘handbrake’.

Some wheel rigs (there will be multiple variants) will be able to support ABS. You’d technically be able to rig up your own with logic too, i.e. ‘rotation sensor’ on wheel and ‘velocity sensor’ on car combined with some logic and maths.

It’s important to note that Techblox IS NOT a car game. As we are in the early stages of development, we will introduce more parts for other machines that can include monster trucks, mechs, perhaps even aircraft like helicopters and fighter jets. But we’re going to focus on cars early during this stage of the development.
