The Next Steps For Techblox - Dev Blog #42
A huge thank you to everyone who took the time to download, install and play our very first demo of the building interface within Techblox. You’ve given us some incredible feedback and have shared some awesome vehicles you’ve created so far.
The main next step for Techblox is to release the ‘Simulation’ side of things so that you can bring your creations to life and drive them. The ‘simulation mode’ will take a number of weeks to develop as there is some work to do to get the Engine and Wheels feeling great.
In the meantime, we want to do a short quick release designed to address a bunch of the valuable feedback you have given us, and here are our current plans on that (see below).
Free Mouse and Camera Movement
Many of you commented about this. Some didn’t like having to hold RMB to move the camera, despite it freeing up the mouse cursor for building. Some really loved the new way of building with the mouse cursor.
Our plan is to offer a hybrid with the benefits of both systems.
We’re reverting the default behavior so that it will work as in Gamecraft\Robocraft like an FPS shooter with the crosshair at the center of the screen being your cursor and the right-mouse button being used for ‘Delete\Cancel’.
We will then allow you to hold Alt to free up the mouse cursor and allow you to continue to build this way when you want to. This allows the mouse cursor to be used to manipulate sliders and text fields on the tweakable stats when you need it to, as well as other things we plan to use the cursor for in the future.
Many commented on the pre-scaled shapes not feeling useful and also cluttering up the Inventory. Most used the scalable shapes almost exclusively finding them more versatile to use.
Our plan is to remove the pre-scaled shapes from the inventory in favor of adding a lot more scalable shapes. This includes shapes we had in Gamecraft that are not yet in Techblox as well as some new shapes that we think will be versatile and useful when scaled in different ways. This should give you more creative options without cluttering the inventory.
Some commented about this being both too bright and too dark depending on the situation. This workshop is temporary and will be replaced when we move to online servers where you can build with many others online, but in the meantime, we’ll adjust the lighting in the workshop to better suit the building.
Driving Seat & Engine
The driving seat & engine received some comments about ‘size’ and a few weren’t sure about the ‘dashboard plate’ on the front of the seat.
Our seat is not intended to be one-size-fits-all. This one was measured to the real-world scale of a particular sedan vehicle (Toyota Camry) and was designed to sit on a plate as the base of the car as opposed to a full block (so if you placed it on a full block it would feel pretty high). The dashboard plate was designed to help users understand where the dashboard should be placed for such cars. We plan to add many seats for lower sports cars, small cars, go-karts, monster trucks, and many other kinds of vehicles. Some will have dashboard plates and others will have more raw bare frames etc. to provide variety. Please be patient as we get more of this content together to release it to you. In the meantime, we will also take a look at both the engine and the sedan seat to see if there are any tweaks we can do that allow them to be usable in more situations without compromising the intended design.
Some of you experienced low FPS and the graphics settings slider didn’t help. We will fix the graphics slider and make it have more of an impact on performance when used.
Once again, thank you everyone who has shared feedback and their creations. There have been some incredible vehicles made by the community so far and if you haven't yet had a chance, check out our discord where players are sharing vehicles!
