The Modular Chassis - Dev Blog #34

Updated: Apr 14

We’ve been experimenting with the idea of a modular chassis which would be rigid, tough and heavy for a low centre of gravity.

It would also provide a cosmetically appropriate look for the bottom of the vehicles. Very few vehicle/machine building games consider the visuals of the underside of their vehicle. But being a competitive game where vehicles and machines could be flipped on their back, we thought it would be interesting to explore this idea.

To create the Chassis above, we used various shapes which you can see below

Additionally, these chassis blocks have been designed to be placed downwards on the floor (so after making your chassis you can raise the vehicle with the 'raise\lower tool' which we have planned). Currently, we're finding that often you want to use 'Plates' as the bottom of your vehicle as this keeps the height down, but using Plates means you have to proxy-build upwards and then make the plates from underneath this is pretty fiddly and can be frustrating.

Creators could also release blueprints for different chassis that other users can use as a starting point for their machines. We could include one or two of them in the starter blueprint inventory for new user accounts. Some of these chassis could give players who are new to building a chance to learn the system and put wheels, seats and engines in a logical position.

It’s important to note that this concept might not make it into the game. We just wanted to share some of our design process with you. Techblox is at an unusually public and early state and we’re happy to talk with you about our thoughts and ideas. However, not everything we share will find itself a part of the final product. If there is anything we’ve shared that you strongly feel should be in the game, of course let us know!

A playable Pre-Pre-Pre-Pre-Pre-Alpha is now available! Make sure to visit our home page at http://www.techblox.com/ to sign up to play it!
