Material Painting - Dev Blog #21

We wanted to talk about a feature that we are introducing to Techblox. Material painting!
With this new feature, players don’t have to delete blocks in order to swap them out with another material type, instead they can point at them and change the material of the block itself! This also changes the block visually to represent the material type you have selected.
In Gamecraft, if we wanted to add a new material we had to also add a whole range of duplicate shapes within the inventory menu, this made it difficult to navigate when trying to find a particular shape and material. With the material painter, we are now able to add even more shapes without fear of unnecessarily bloating the inventory menu.
Each material type has its own properties and weight which means that even changing a single cube can have a drastic impact on your vehicle that will affect ‘structural integrity’ and ‘toughness vs guns’.
We’re also considering that these material types can come in various cosmetic options too. So for example steel is a standard material, but we can have rusty steel, brushed steel, patterned steel and chipped painted steel etc.
Here’s the material painting in action. Of course, everything within this video is still placeholder and uses some Gamecraft UI elements.
