Introducing Bevel Rendering - Dev Blog #1

Welcome to the very first Techblox Devlog. We are going to be posting development progress frequently on this channel. Not everything will be pretty and polished, but we hope you enjoy sharing this journey with us Today we wanted to share details on the Bevel rendering technology that we’re working on that will come to Techblox. In the real world, shapes do not have perfect infinitely sharp edges. But in most renderers objects can look artificially sharp.

Many 3D artists add ‘bevels’ to make them look more real. In Robocraft, the blocks had a crude bevel added in a normal map, but these blocks could not be scaled.

As an example you can see from this image (Disturbed Force shared in the server last night) that the bevelling on this vehicle is done per cube and can lead to some unwanted bumps in its design.

With the new bevel rendering technology for Techblox you can scale blocks and it would look much more realistic. Below is a short video of this tech rendering in real time within the Unity editor. You can see how the bevelling works when blocks are scaled.

The above video is not how you will build and scale in Techblox, we’ll be revealing more details on building soon. This is not representative of the lighting in HDRP and is just an example of the bevel rendering

The blue shiny blocks in the video actually have perfectly sharp edges, but we’re doing some tricks to add the bevel afterwards in the render pipeline. This also means that when you snap blocks together, the bevel smooths out between the two blocks and makes everything look nicely ‘joined’ together. Finally, to show you the visual effect below is a short video of us turning the bevel render on and off.
